Significant Advantages Over Hydraulic Starters
Electric starters for the General Electric LM2500 gas turbine engines on the Italian Navy’s Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura OPVs will be the first operational use of this innovative system for the LM2500 family. They are already integrated into the LM500 engines that power the South Korean PKX-B patrol boats.

Offering an 80+% decrease in footprint and 85% weight reduction compared to conventional hydraulic starter systems, GE Marine Solutions electric starters are now available across the complete line of its aeroderivative marine gas turbines. Incorporating an integrated clutch design, the electric starters require only a single cooling interface, providing for either fresh water or oil-based cooling media. They provide exactly the same functionality as hydraulic starters with respect to engine start, motoring/purge, water wash and borescope.
