GE Aviation CF6 for Japan’s C-2

12 Engines at €156 million to be Delivered from Late 2021

The Japanese MoD has ordered 12 CF6-80C2K1F propulsion systems from GE Aviation for the Kawasaki C-2 transport aircraft programme. The units covered by the order, valued at ¥18.8 billion (€156 million), will be delivered from late 2021.

The C-2 for the Japanese Air Self-Defence Force is a key strategic component of the nation’s priority modernisation programme, aimed at strengthening core components of Japanese defence capability. The CF6 was selected to power the aircraft in 2003 and in 2017, on completion of the lengthy development programme, GE supplied 26 propulsion systems – including nacelle systems and thrust reversers.

The MoD has worked closely with GE Aviation in an effort to reduce acquisition costs and, with this contract, expects to demonstrate a reduction of up to ¥4.8 billion. The company continues to work diligently on supplying cost-effective propulsion systems for the balance of the Japanese requirement.
