Visible and IR Illumination for HYDRA-70 Rocket Family

General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems (GDOTS) recently awarded a contract modification to Orbital ATK for the supply of M257 (visible) and M278 (IR) illuminating flares for the HYDRA-70 rocket family. The modification covers the supply of over 23,000 flares.

The HYDRA-70 rocket system equips US APACHE and COBRA attack helicopters, F-16 FALCON fighters and combat aircraft in service with many nations worldwide. The current order is to satisfy a US government requirement for an illuminating suite for both visible and IR spectra: Orbital ATK received an initial production and First Article Test contarct in January 2016.
