Further Major Order for PATRIOT Components

Raytheon has issued a contract worth more than U$30 million (approx. €27 million) to Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems for the supply of components for the PATRIOT integrated air and missile defence system. Besides electrical generators, Jenoptik will also be providing spare parts packages and test equipment for operating the systems over several years.

As a long-term supplier for the system, the technology group already announced the receipt of PATRIOT orders back in August and September 2016. Jenoptik develops and produces the power supply units and further sub-systems for PATRIOT in Germany at its Altenstadt site.

Jenoptik develops and produces electrical energy systems for military platforms such as wheeled vehicles and tracked vehicles, as well as missile defence systems, including intelligent energy systems, diesel-electric generator sets, auxiliary power units, alternators, and electrical components, such as converters and power electronics. All products have proven their quality in national and international projects over many years. Example applications in which the devices have been reliably used include the LEOPARD 2 MBT, PUMA IFV, and BOXER APV, as well as the above mentioned PATRIOT missile defence system.
The company’s energy systems are used to supply power to the on-board system and traction motors in systems, either independently, or in combination with the main engine. To meet the rising energy requirements of military vehicles, Jenoptik also produces high-voltage energy systems with capacities of 20-500kW. The systems are highly robust and extremely energy-efficient, also making use of hybrid technology in various stages of hybridisation.

Even if the engine or main unit is switched off, electrical systems such as the on-board electronics, sensor systems, ventilation, and air conditioning continue to function to ensure the overall system remains available and ready for operation. At the same time, factors such as fuel consumption, heat generation and engine noise are all reduced to a minimum. The additional installation of an energy accumulator increases the range of your vehicle, providing the potential to extend your mission.

The increasing need to protect troops is just one of the factors driving up the energy requirements of military platforms. All energy systems supply the platform with electricity in exactly the form in which it is required. Power, capacity, voltage, current, and frequency are all optimally tuned to the particular consumers in question, as well as innovative high-voltage consumers.

To achieve this, Jenoptik offers products of the latest technological standard that, when used in the particular vehicle in question, the company’s subsystems, such as generator sets, alternators, power electronics, or electrical components, are optimally tuned to one another and enable the energy for the platform to be managed in an intelligent and extremely efficient manner.
