MONCh Gear Box Product Review
The Gerber FLATIRON, a cleaver style folding knife that looks like it would feel right at home in the hands of a barber, at the same time in the hands of a butcher…Sweeney Todd, anyone?
This wide and strong cutting tool is fast becoming one of my favourite knifes, even though the blade joint needed a drop of oil to loosen up, the blade needed sharpening and it came with a pocket clip that doesn’t allow you to adjust its positioning (i.e. one is pretty much stuck carrying this knife in the tip-up position) and it needs a break-in period to loosen up.
The blade is made from type 7Cr17MoV steel, which is cheap steel that dulls relatively fast but sharpens easily. This is good because I found Gerber has dull blades when purchased. Quickly sharpened and now it cuts great.
But, I am able to overlook all of these things as I really like this knife. Gerber built it well, it feels good to hold and due to its unique design, it can cover some bases that other knives cannot tackle quite as well. It features a robust 3.6in/9.14cm blade in 7Cr17MoV steel and a textured G-10 composite handle.
