First contract for delivery of a lithium-ion battery developed in-house

The contract was concluded with the German customer in the summer

In a next step, the partial battery “Made by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems” is to be installed in an existing Type 212A submarine of the German Navy.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are considered the most modern mode of energy storage. Compared to conventional battery technologies, they offer significant advantages – in the area of submarine batteries, for example, major increases in performance and operational improvements to the boat.

We are thus taking on a pioneering role among the shipyards in Europe and, at the same time, equipping our submarines with multiple operational advantages.”

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has been researching the development of its own LIB system since 2015. The completion of the project in September 2023 ensured that the technology can be installed on board submarines in a low-risk manner to increase performance. On July 26, 2024, the sales phase with the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) and the German Navy was also successfully completed: on that day, the contract for the delivery of the lithium-ion partial battery became effective.

The partial battery is now to be installed in an existing HDW Type 212A submarine of the German Navy to demonstrate the technology and performance advantages. The first integration of the battery, and thus also the technology demonstration, is scheduled for early 2028. With the proven integration and testing in the submarine, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will receive the so-called “Parent Navy Approval”, which can be used as a risk-mitigating measure for further existing and future projects.

The advantages of the LIB system are considerable in the operational spectrum. Compared to the well-known lead-acid batteries, the new lithium-ion technology offers twice the lifespan, significantly higher battery capacities, greater ranges at maximum speed and reduced snorkeling rates. This way, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is setting new standards in the energy supply of its submarines.
