FEINDEF 2021: Fincantieri and Navantia Strengthen European Collaboration

Boosting Collaboration Beyond Scope of EPC

At FEINDEF 2021 in Madrid on 3 November, Fincantieri and Navantia signed an MoU aimed at boosting their relationship and exploring the benefits of strengthened collaboration in the naval and maritime domains. The MoU was signed by Giuseppe Giordo, General Manager of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division, and Navantia Chairman, Ricardo Domínguez.

The two companies will assess future opportunities for the Italian and Spanish navies, including development of joint projects and participation in the development of future destroyers and other naval platforms destined to form part of the Europe’s future defence forces. The companies already collaborate – alongside France’s Naval Group – on the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) programme, to date the most important naval initiative within the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) project.

We have long agreed that, in order to stand its ground with the global challenges of the future, we need a robust and long lasting cooperation in the defence and security field at a European level, just so our continent will be able to play an increasingly important role and this agreement goes in that direction. We are therefore very satisfied to give substance to a plan that can no longer be postponed and to build a collaboration path based on important programmes of the two navies,” stated Fincantieri CEO, Giuseppe Bono.

Navantia’s Ricardo Domínguez highlighted “the real opportunity of collaboration that this MoU represents – as it is the first one signed between both companies at this level and with this ambitious scope […] We aim to strengthen European defence and boost [the] European defence industry position and we think that agreements [such] as ours pave the way towards this objective.”
