Effective, Alternative Detection Capabilities
Brazilian manufacturer IACIT is highlighting the capabilities of its OTH 0100 over-the-horizon (OTH) radar at EXPONAVAL in Valparaíso this week.
Using innovative surface wave technology and projecting radar energy beyond the curvature of the earth, the OTH 0100 allows operators to conduct surveillance operations beyond the ranges available to conventional radar systems. IACIT’s OTH 0100 is the only such radar in South America and allows for maritime surveillance ranges in the order of 370 kilometres. This means greater efficiency, since a given área can be covered with a smaller number of radars.
The system uses adaptative digital beam forming and HF frequency energy to provide reliable, persistent area coverage, employing a unique system of interference elimination techniques to ensure coverage is independent of meteorogical or sea conditions. In addition, the system can detect vessels that are not broadcasting AIS signals – known in the maritime policing business as “non-cooperative” vessels. This assists in the detection and prevention of potentially hostile acts such as smuggling, piracy or human trafficking.
