EXPONAVAL 2018: Lockheed Martin Intensifies Involvement in Chile

New Local Office Marks the Beginning of a Step by Step Expansion Process

During EXPONAVAL 2018, Lockheed Martin took the opportunity to highlight several of its in-country activities in Chile: donating $20,000 to a children’s home in Valparaíso, transferring an exoskeleton to ASMAR and announcing that it will open a local office in Chile, which it regards as a good base from which to develop new regional potential.

The programme of frigate modernisation is progressing very well: since we have previously done this also with the F-16, Chile is clearly a strategic country in which to grow in Latin America. We are taking important steps in that direction, and we are going to have an office here in Chile – the beginning of a step by step process. We work closely with ASMAR and other Chilean companies,” Lockheed Martin’s Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, John Lopes, told MONCh.

Regarding the modernisation of the Chilean Navy’s Type 23 frigates being conducted in collaboration with ASMAR, Lopes confirmed that it is, “integration of launcher systems and centralised radars in a combat mission system of Canadian origin.”

In October the last three (of a total of six) BLACK HAWK helicopters for the Chilean Air Force were delivered. “From the date of signing the contract until the delivery of the first three helicopters, only 19 months elapsed,” commented Sikorsky’s Vice President for Latin America, Adam Schierholz. “We hope that in the future there will be requirements for more helicopters and we are confident that, after flying the S70i, they will want more. We believe that the Chilean Army may also be interested.”

On the Lockheed Martin stand at EXPONAVAL an exoskeleton attracted considerable attention. The mechanism allows operators to shoulder much heavier burdens than are normally compatible with the human frame, using an advanced ergonomic design that transfers heavy loads to the ground.
