Expodefensa 2017: Rosoboronexport a First-Timer

Russian innovations are showcased at Expodefensa 2017

Joint Stock Company Rosoboronexport (part of the Rostec State Corporation) is taking part in Expodefensa 2017 for the first time. Despite more than 20-years of military and technical cooperation between Russia and Colombia, this is the inaugural participation of Rosoboronexport is reaffirming its commitment to Colombia and the region at this eight-year old international exhibition dedicated to Latin American defence, security and stability.

Considering the technology advances in the field of defense and security – along with a successful history of cooperation – it might seem puzzling that Rosoboronexport is exhibiting here in Bogotá for the first time.

Nevertheless, the Head of the Rosoboronexport delegation Alexander Denisov avers that, “all these years, our countries have maintained and strengthened good mutually beneficial relations, with the volume of supplies of Russian military products and services reaching U$ 500 million.”

Based on the remarks of Colombia´s Minister of Defence, whereby Colombia spends 3,5% of its GDP in bolstering its military services (which are often at the forefront of response and resilience for all national and natural disasters), this is a significant contribution to Colombia´s national security.

For example, more than 20 Mi-17-type helicopters are currently in service with Colombia¨s Army. It should be noted that ROE also organises the Mi-17 (built by Russian Helicopters)MRO schedule.

Denisov concludes: “… we see an interest in active cooperation (with Colombia and greater Latin America) on other types of Russian-made products for the armed forces, as well as special operations units of the army and the police.” Like so many national trade organizations and JSCs at Expodefensa, Rosoboronexport is here to listen, find new partners and ingresses into the market – as well as new customers – and capitalise on decades of cooperation and relationships based on mutual respect.

Rosoboronexport´s comprehensive display features more than 250 models of Russian weapons and military equipment. In addition, LLC Special Technology Centre and the Military Industrial Company are also participating in this joint display of Russian expertise as organised by Rosoboronexport for Expodefensa 2017.

Experts on state-of-the-art Russian air frames (displayed on the Rosoboronexport stand) are available to have in-depth discussions on the: versatile Yak-130 combat trainer; the super-maneuverable, multi-role fighters Su-35 and Su-30MK; and, the MiG-29M multi-role frontline fighter. Successful in the war on terrorism and other campaigns, these aircraft offer the highest potential and value for the Latin American region.

As helicopters remain the “workhorse” for a wide range of military duties and deployments around the region, Rosoboronexport expects that existing and potential customers will have interest in the Mi-17, Mi-26T2 and Ansat helicopters. Many of these are in service already in Latin America and have logged countless mission hours with great success.

Defence decision-makers in the region are traditionally attracted to Russia’s air defence systems, especially the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile/gun system, Tor-M2KM and Buk-M2E SAM systems, and the Igla-S MANPADS. These systems are battle-proven, have a low cost of ownership and are very robust while providing leading edge efficiency.

From a civil security perspective, Rosoboronexport is keen to showcase the Russian-made Security Systems, a comprehensive product that encompasses and integrates the whole range of law enforcement, counter-terrorism, homeland, infrastructure and information security solutions.

Rosoboronexport is mindful of new surface ship requirements in Colombia and the region. There are experts available to discuss Project 20382 “Tiger”class small patrol boat / corvette; Project 14310 “Mirazrah” class patrol boat; and, Project 636 a large diesel-electric submarine. Exhibited on the company’s stand, they should draw the attention of senior naval officers from Latin America.

Important for nearly all Latin American countries, Rosoboronexport´s land forces’ weapons and military equipment offering will certainly be of interest. In Latin America – especially in Colombia, specific parts of the land forces / special operations units combat crime, terrorism and drug cartels. For this reason, Rosoboronexport expects foreign delegations to take interest in the BMP-3M infantry fighting vehicles, BTR-80A / 82A armored personnel carriers, Tiger-M and Typhoon-K family multi-purpose armored motor vehicles, as well as various small arms and close combat weapons.

Conveniently located for visitors keen to see what is on offer from Russia, Rosoboronexport’s pavilion is stand number 103, located in the central part of the pavilion and next to the Colombian Ministry of National Defense’s display.
