Improved Effects, Safety and Range to 40km
EXPAL’s Extended Range (ER) 155mm artillery ammunition has successfully passed acceptance tests by the Spanish Army, the company announced on 9 April.
The ER range of ammunition, developed in collaboration between the Spanish General Directio of Armament and Materiel (DGAM) and EXPAL, represents an important step forward, bringing benefits that include improved safety, enhanced terminal effects and an increase in range to up to 40 kilometres. It is already in service with several armies and has been qualified to the appropriate NATO standards. The development forms part of a 2018 agreement between the Spanish Army and EXPAL for the supply of ammunition for the SIAC 52cal 155mm and M109A5 39cal artillery pieces. The supply agreement covers ER projectiles equipped with base-bleed unit, modular charges and the EC-102 electronic fuze.
The new ammunition seeks to answer the armed forces’ most demanding requirements in range, effects and safety. To this end, EXPAL has applied aerodynamic design and advanced energetic materials to the ammunition to increase range, and the latest generation electronic fuzes to maximise effect.
The tests were conducted recently at the Torregorda Test Centre in Cádiz by the Logistical Support Command (MALE) and Field Artillery Command of the Spanish Army and the Marine Infantry of the Naval Force. Pedro Sallent, General Director of EXPAL, emphasised the “long and profitable relationship of collaboration that EXPAL has maintained for many years with the Logistical Support Command of the Spanish Army (MALE), the Army and the Ministry of Defense, both in the supply of products and services as well as the joint development of new solutions.”
