EW Europe: Chemring Details RESOLVE

Chemring Technology Solutions’ Resolve electronic warfare system upgraded

Chemring Technology Solutions’ RESOLVE electronic warfare (EW) system has been upgraded in order to more efficiently support emerging requirements from the ground-based user communities, company offiicals have disclosed to MONS.

Speaking to MONS at the EW Europe event in London on 7 May 2017, Chemring’s Strategic Business Development Manager, Roger Hopper explained how they had recently updated Resolve’s integrated Prefix software in order to make the solution ‘platform agnostic’, meaning it can be rapidly and effectively re-roled between man-packed; mounted; static; and maritime operational scenarios, company officials explained.

Resolve comprises a modular and scalable solution for the, “interception and geolocation of tactical communications,” a company source confirmed.

Company sources explained how the upgrade had been triggered by requests from the user community, meaning operators would no longer be required to re-calibrate Resolve’s software between configuration changes.

Resolve’s updated Prefix software, which can automatically group Direction Finding (DF) targets to support ground-based, now features automatic calibration providing it with the capability to execute, “swift transition between operating roles at the medium halt, long halt, in vehicles and at permanent operating base installations,” company officials stated.

“Prefix has deeply integrated target and ignore lists to deliver superfast target management and definition. It is designed to enable rapid transition between deployment roles with the unique ability to maintain settings across transitions,” company literature confirmed.

We have seen significant challenges relating to calibration,” Chemring sources described while explaining how the upgraded version had been available to the user community in early 2017 and onwards.

The automatic calibration capability means there is no requirement for individual calibration files for specific applications, with software enhancements also resulting in increased efficiency and accuracy of RESOLVE DF data, although Chemring was unable to provide further details due to operational restrictions.

RESOLVE can be set up in a ground-mounted configuration within two minutes, as well as being carried in a back-pack form factor for On The Move (OTM) missions, company sources described. An OTM capability provides ground assault and reconnaissance teams with full spectrum surveillance and DF capabilities, which when networked to multiple other Resolve systems, provides triangulation of fixed targets using Angle of Arrival techniques.

Defence sources explained to MONS how armed forces conducting missions across the Contemporary Operating Environment required a flexible DF capability, meaning it can be quickly re-transitioned between mounted and dismounted configurations dependent upon rapidly evolving mission requirements.

Additionally, the payload continues to be integrated on a variety of tactical ground vehicles with the latest being Paramount Group’s MARAUDER 4×4 armoured fighting vehicle which has been developed for an undisclosed customer.

Elsewhere, Chemring is pursuing the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Land Seeker programme, which is seeking a mounted and dismounted EW capability, as well as Australia’s Land 500 effort and the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) Cyber Crest exercise, which seeks to integrate communications with an OTM DF capability.

Chemring Australia is currently contracted by the Australian Department of Defense to replace the army’s legacy Manpack Electronic Surveillance Systems with RESOLVE 3 solutions by March 2018.

Finally, Chemring disclosed how the RESOLVE payload had also been integrated on board a maritime vessel to assist in counter-narcotics; counter-terrorism; and search and rescue missions. Looking ahead, company sources added how one undisclosed customer was also considering utilising RESOLVE for Vehicle Interdiction (VI) operations.
