Exhibited at Eurosatory 2018
At SOFINS 2017, Nexter Systems, part of the KNDS joint venture, introduced a new Low Profile variant of its well known ARX 25 land remote controled weapon station (RCWS). ARX 25 features an advanced stabilised day/night sensor head allowing panoramic observation and providing on-the-move capability. It ensures superior target acquisition and engagement.
Nexter brought in the expert in metalworking TRA-C industrie to build the main structure of the ARX 25 turret as part of an export contract. TRA-C industrie used Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology to optimise the weight of the RCWS and ensure sufficient mechanical strength to unleash the full potential the 25mm Nexter Systems cannon.
Constellium successfully overcame the various challenges inherent in the technological innovation through the use of ALPLAN 5083 aluminium plates, providing dimensional stability paired with very narrow thickness tolerance ranges. ALPLAN 5083 precision plates exhibit good dimensional stability. Their low internal stresses reduces the effects of plate deformation during machining, thus saving on extra operations such as rough-milling, furnishing or re-work. Surface milling by the end user is not necessary.
The 24-month contract is being handled on the new FSW machine, which was installed at the TRA-C industrie site in 2017 following an investment of €700.000.
Constellium is a global aluminum rolling and extrusions firm, operating nearly two dozen production facilities worldwide, as well as research and development centers scattered around the globe. The company buys aluminum and processes that material into value-add materials for the company’s customers.
