Eurosatory 2018: Rheinmetall Unleashes LYNX KF41 IFV

Rheinmetall’s LYNX KF41 next-generation combat vehicle shown in Villepinte was presented to the international public for the first time

Key technologies influencing AFV design include anti-access/area denial systems that, according to Rheinmetall, will reduce the ability to gain and retain air dominance, EW systems (denying reliable communications), enhanced artillery systems (restricting freedom of action), and advanced AFV platform designs that are difficult to defeat with existing systems. The new combat vehicle unveiled at Rheinmetall’s outdoor booth on 12 June is said to combine high levels of adaptability, survivability, and capacity. With these attributes, the vehicle is seen as the ideal platform to adapt to diverse mission/combat environments, including: peacekeeping operations, counter-insurgency actions, and engagements in general warfighting against constantly evolving threats. New technology, as found in the SDTR radio from Rohde & Schwarz and RUAG‘s tactical router, provide the vehicle with the capabilities that are needed to cope with future mission requirements.

Rheinmetall notes that the new IFV combines the latest innovations.

– The LYNX KF41 is a complete family of vehicles utilising a common drive module plus a flexible mission kit to allow any base vehicle to be configured as an IFV, an APC, a command and recovery vehicle, as well as an ambulance.

The vehicle’s subsystems are highly modular and adaptable, featuring a ‘digital backbone’ with a generic open architecture that allows easy integration of new mission systems.

– High level mobility is provided by an 850kW (1,140HP) Liebherr engine, a mission-proven transmission from RENK AG, and a flexible suspension system supplied by the Australian company Supashock.

– Modular survivability systems (ballistic and mine protection systems, passive and reactive systems) offer unprecedented flexibility to meet the variety of current and future threats.

– The LANCE 2.0 turret, as the next generation of the in-service LANCE family, provides an organic capability, with the next enhancement including the introduction of the new WOTAN 35
electrically-driven cannon for firing Rheinmetall’s 35x228mm ammunition family.
