Eurosatory 2018: Hensoldt Details TRML-4D

Ten systems ordered by NATO customer

At Eurosatory, Hensoldt showcased its newly developed TRML-4D radar system for ground-based air defence.

This C-band (5.25 gigahertz/GHz to 5.925GHz) ground-based air surveillance radar is expected to be delivered to its first customer by 2020, company sources told MONCh during the Singapore Air Show (for story please click here).

The TRML-4D is a land-based version of the firm’s TRS-4D naval surveillance radar which equips the US Navy’s FREEDOM-class littoral combat ship. Although the firm stated that some testing of this new radar is still required it added that the development of the TRML-4D in a land-based configuration has been relatively straightforward given the work that the company has already performed on the naval variant.

The TRML-4D is the latest development of the legacy C-band TRML-3D ground-based air surveillance radar, with the major difference being the former’s active electronically scanned array antenna, compared to the passive electronically scanned array of the latter. Hensoldt added that it has secured a customer for the TRML-4D, which will take delivery of ten systems of the radar from 2020, although declining to name the client, only stating that it is a “non-NATO” customer. Series production takes place at HENSOLDT’s Ulm site.

TRML-4D uses the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology, which enables the acquisition of targets after just one rotation of the antenna, thus improving the response time and hit probability even in a complex environment with a high target density and involving highly agile and asymmetric threats. Thanks to the precise coordination of all the antenna elements in the C band (NATO G band) and special signal processing modes, the radar can provide extremely exact information on the targets, thus guaranteeing early and precise weapon assignment. An integrated secondary radar system for identifying friend or foe (IFF) prevents friendly fire. The high performance of the radar is largely due to the great number of transmit / receive (T/R) modules in the antenna, which are made from special RF-capable materials.
