Leonardo responsible for providing & integrating naval systems and developing new system capabilities
Typical of the innovative, high technology solutions Leonardo seeks to provide to meet its naval customers’ demands is the combat management system (CMS) under development for the Italian Navy under the fleet-wide modernisation programme in which Leonardo is responsible for providing and integrating all onboard systems and developing new system capabilities.
Training and support is a key strategic driver for Leonardo. A dedicated virtual reality (VR) area on the stand allows visitors to investigate the MORPHEUS XR system, a virtual trainer that can be customised for any system and gives a truly immersive real-life operating environment.
The company is highlighting a wide set of naval defence products, from heavyweight torpedoes to the most innovative new lightweight weapons such as the BLACK SCORPION, the only existing 5in torpedo, capable of high discrimination of submarine threats and small underwater targets.
In the naval artillery, Leonardo is one of largest manufacturers of 40mm naval gun mounts, with more than 850 systems in service with 30 navies worldwide. Naval guns are represented at Euronaval by the new fully digital MARLIN 40. A range of guided ammunition, notably VULCANO 127 and 76mm, which feature high accuracy, will be on display.
Leonardo is also exhibiting its wide range of naval helicopters, among them the successful medium twin-engine multirole military NH90 and the advanced unmanned AWHero, selected to operate within the OCEAN 2020 European Defence Research Programme, which can also integrate the GABBIANO ultralight surveillance radar.
Leonardo’s US subsidiary Leonardo DRS is also at the show, displaying innovative hybrid electric drive (HED) ship propulsion solutions.
