Detecting the RF

Electronic support measures can greatly aid the fight against illicit and illegal drone activities

Drone defence systems have been in abundance during this year’s UK Security Exhibition being held in London between 28 November and 29 November. Eskan has been exhibiting its new Eskan-Stura drone detection and neutralisation system. The Eskan-Stura is remarkable in that it is designed as an Electronic Counter Measure (ECM) and Electronic Attack (EA) system which can be used to detect the Radio Frequency (RF) emissions of a drone and to detect the aircraft’s presence. This can be done through the detection of the transmissions used by the aircraft to relay video and aircraft telemetry, for example. The Eskan-Stura can be used either to simply detect the drone and identify its position using the ECM, or the EA capability can be brought into play to jam the RF link between the aircraft and its controller. The system monitors 2.4 gigahertz/GHz and five gigahertz wavebands and can detect a drone’s RF transmissions at a range of between one kilometre (0.5 nautical miles/nm) to three kilometres (1.6nm). Officials from the company speaking during the exhibition revealed that Eskan has already made sales of the Eskan-Stura to customers in the Middle East and was looking forward to expanding these sales into the European market.
