ESG ensures secure TETRA communication at the 60th Munich Security Conference

Presents its pioneering innovation project ACOP

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) – founded in 1963 – is the world’s leading forum for debates on international security policy issues. The Munich Security Conference traditionally takes place at the renowned Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Once again, a large number of participants from all over the world will be attending. Heads of state, ministers, leaders of international organisations and leading representatives from business, the media, research and civil society are expected to exchange their perspectives and ideas on international security.

The requirements for ensuring the security of all participants are correspondingly high. Since 2023, ESG has been tasked with implementing secure TETRA communication for the Munich Security Conference, which is taking place this year from 16 to 18 February, as well as for the following main conferences until 2025. Together with Stadtwerke München, ESG is making a valuable contribution to the success of the conference within the highly demanding security requirements: On behalf of ESG, Stadtwerke München is setting up two TETRA base stations at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof and integrating them into its overall TETRA network. This will ensure uninterrupted and secure TETRA communication in the hotel itself and in the neighbourhood.

The TETRA terminals and their accessories for the Munich Security Conference staff, the German Armed Forces and the participating security organisations are specially designed for concealed carrying and are therefore ideal for the range of applications during the conference. The project once again emphasises ESG’s special capabilities, particularly for IT & communication and system integration in a highly complex, security-critical environment.

On the evening before the conference, the Munich Security Conference and the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub are hosting the MSC (Munich Security Conference) Innovation Night. At the MSC Innovation Night, companies, start-ups, academics, researchers and other experts will present their latest innovations in the field of security on topics such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and drone technology. Together with the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub, ESG is presenting the “Augmented Common Operational Picture” (ACOP) solution at this year’s event. ACOP has been evaluated for use in exercise support by the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub together with the Army Combat Simulation Centre since March 2023. ACOP is an innovation for military simulation-based training and operational planning that enables realistic, interactive 3D visualisation of the situation on the battlefield with the help of powerful mixed-reality glasses. The terrain can be displayed through the glasses with a projection size of up to 10×10 metres. This enables soldiers to carry out an intuitive terrain assessment and an interactive situation briefing using hand gestures.

ACOP is an integrated solution that is connected to existing military systems, e.g. command and control systems. As a result, both the own and the enemy situation are transmitted in real time and changes are synchronised between all systems. The situation display via ACOP is not limited to land forces, but can also be used for airspace coordination or the visualisation of naval units at sea. By using multiple glasses, all participants in a situation briefing can interactively access the same situation picture and make changes, even if they are at separate locations. In this way, ACOP not only makes an important contribution to the command and control capability, but also to the protection of soldiers during operation and exercise planning.
