Supporting Growth of Spanish Defence Industry
Escribano Mechanical & Engineering (EME), a family-owned Madrid company specialising in innovative defence-related technologies, has acquired a 3% stake in Indra, an enterprise valued at over €65 million, the company announced on 16 May.
Founded in 1989 as a machining workshop, EME has grown from 80 to 700 employees (of whom over 40% are female and the majority of whom have engineering or technical backgrounds) over the last decade, operating in over 20 countries and with an estimated 2023 revenue of €140 million. Escribano has now become the second industrial partner in Indra, consolidating its position in the defence sector. Company sources define the operation as the result of a “clear commitment to solidity of the Spanish defence industry; it is a strategic and technological sector for the economic and social development of Spain, which Escribano has a strong commitment to, and to which [it] contributes with [its] experience”.
One factor in the company’s strong growth is the vision it began to implement in 2010: to achieve vertical integration of its capacities. For this reason, the company established a policy for R&D, hiring engineers and technical staff competent to manage the entire production process. Design and manufacturing today is conducted at the company’s headquarters in Alcala de Henares, Madrid. It has also developed close collaboration with major universities in Spain and has launched a project for a future technology centre – a 3,000sqm space for maturation of R&D initiatives and innovation.
