Euronaval 2018: RU Naval?

DNV GL Provides Naval Technical Assurance

International accredited registrar and classification bureau DNV GL, headquartered in Høvik, Norway, supports many navies through classification, technical and system advisory services, new building supervision, plan approval, verification and certification of vessel materials and components in accordance with a navy’s operational profile, and domestic and international regulations.

DNV GL’s Naval Rule set RU-NAVAL has been specifically developed to meet the challenges designers and yards, procurement organisations, naval flag authorities, and navies face in implementing a naval ship or submarine project.

A tailored classification approach for naval ships provides for a better differentiated assurance process, depending on the requirements of the navy involved. DNV GL ensures that the scope of classification matches the desired functional and operational requirements of the planned vessel, often described in a concept of operations (CONOPS). The classification process captures these requirements by determining a set of ‘class notations’ that describe solutions to address the functional and operational requirements and associated risks. Naval classification provides assurance to naval stakeholders that their vessel operates within appropriate safety levels.

Recently, DNV GL has focussed on supporting navies with new approaches and solutions to address the growing challenge of reliability and availability of naval platforms, as drivers such as complex technology, automation, reduced personnel complements and skills shortages place demands on vessels and navies.

For example, DNV GL has conducted ‘life of type extension’ (LOTE) assessments to examine naval platforms that have been operated for much longer than initially planned. Applying LOTE to warships can demonstrate a platform’s capability to fulfil its duties over an extended lifetime, safely and reliably, including the implementation of tailored countermeasures and actions where needed.

DNV GL’s depth of expertise in supporting naval submarine projects is extensive. The organisation’s submarine group provides extensive support to naval administrations in terms of compliance, feasibility of new technology solutions, risk assessments and expert advice on design questions, even in the early specification and design phase. Alongside this it ensures that a submarine and its systems and components are manufactured in accordance with the rules and specifications – that it is, in fact, ‘built-as-ordered’ – and can also witness all necessary tests, especially of all safety-relevant components and systems, and accompany the trial dives necessary to verify safe operation.
