Support for Future Concept Development
Elbit Systems UK completed a series of demonstration flights of the Skylark 3 Hybrid UAV in March for the Royal Air Force’s Rapid Capabilities Office (RAF RCO).
The flights were “in support of [the RCO’s] future concept development programme,” the company stated. The hybrid powertrain is also of interest, as UK MoD explores ways to achieve its ambitions to reach net zero carbon emissions.
Skylark 3 Hybrid has two separate propulsion systems. One is a conventional internal combustion engine, which can be used to deliver the aircraft to an area of interest quickly. The second, an electric engine, allows the aircraft to fly silently, reducing the likelihood of detection. The aircraft uses both engines to launch and reach altitude, but only requires one engine for sustained flight. Endurance is variably quoted at between 18 and 20 hours.
“The successful demonstration of the Skylark 3 Hybrid is indicative of our drive to support the RAF in realising its ambitions for future capabilities, and to provide an environmentally responsible and energy-efficient method of maximising the Skylark’s endurance,” Elbit Systems UK CEO, Martin Fausset, said.
