HENSOLDT UK Introduces SHARPEYE MK 5 Navigation Radar
The sensor solution provider HENSOLDT presents a new variant of its successful SharpEyeTM naval radar series in London. The new variant, Mk 5, is promoted for use on smaller military ships that require full capability with limited space availability.
“SharpEye provides the user with the most capable radar in its class that allows exceptional performance against small targets in clutter with minimal user adjustment,” said Russell Gould, Managing Director of HENSOLDT UK, formerly Kelvin Hughes. He added, “Kelvin Hughes SharpEye radars have been fitted to more than 30 leading naval and coast guard services worldwide, and the Mk 5 makes this technology available to a wider range of naval and coast guard vessels.”
SharpEye is described by HENSOLDT as a state-of-the-art coherent, pulse Doppler X band (8.5GHz to 10.68GHz) radar for navigation and situational awareness. It translates sophisticated radar technology such as gallium nitride (GaN) power transistor technology into superior detection performance of small targets in heavy clutter, thus improving mission success and survivability of military and coast guard vessels. In an earlier written statement from Kelvin Hughes, the company noted that SharpEye is a very sensitive radar, so the smallest increase in mean energy brings a large increase in detection performance. The use of GaN transistors has improved even further the detection performance of the radar.
