DSEI 2019 Preview

More of the Same – And Something Completely Different

To be held at the ExCeL centre in London’s Docklands from 10-13 September, DSEI 2019 marks the 20th year for the biennial event, bringing together senior international military and trade experts from the land, sea, air, joint and security domains in an optimal business environment, according to organisers Clarion Events.

Full supported by the British government, in the form of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the armed forces and the Department for International Trade, DSEI 2019’s platinum partners with General Dynamics and BAE Systems. A total of more than 1,500 exhibitors and 35,000 attendees are expected and the 46 national pavilions will include debuts from Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine.

A Space Hub, debuting at DSEI in September, will offer a unique opportunity for industry specialists, delegates and the MoD to look to the future and discuss the capabilities and challenges offered in the rapidly-growing space sector. The sector’s UK income currently stands at £14.8billion (€16.6 billion), and it looks set to increase its presence in the defence industry as next-generation technology and threats continue to evolve. The space topic will also be explored as part of DSEI’s Aerospace Capability Conference, supported by MoD. Exhibitors in the Space Hub include household names, such as Airbus, alongside up-and-coming small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), such as Oxford Space Systems, recent winners of a £1million technology grant from MoD’s Defence and Security Accelerator for development of a wrapped-rib antenna.

SMEs will also have a strong presence in the Innovation Hub, a platform through which companies outside of the traditional defence remit will demonstrate cutting-edge products for adoption by military users. Exhibitors include Phonexia, specialists in speech technology, demonstrating its DeepEmbeddings voice-mapping biometric engine, and ESROE, exhibiting the world’s smallest Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system: the MicroESM acts as a key sensor for military platforms such as drones and unmanned vessels, for which previous systems have been too large or consumed too much power.

To mark the 20th anniversary, a podcast series has been launched. “Defence and Security Debates” will include four round-table panel discussions with leading voices from among the UK’s senior military, political and industrial figures, including Defence Ministers, Members of Parliament and industry figureheads from DSEI’s core exhibitor base. They will focus on four core themes: Defence Procurement; Cross Sector Exploitation; People and Skills; and Future Defence Capability. Led by DSEI Chairman, Rear Adm Simon Williams, each discussion examines how these areas have developed over the last two decades since DSEI was established, as well as current challenges and opportunities. The podcasts are available to download on the DSEI website.

2019 will also see the launch of the DSEI Supply Chain Network Programme, a buyer-led diary online appointment and concierge service allowing procurement attendees to meet with companies of key potential interest to them.
