DSEI 2019 Preview: ATMACA Heralds ‘New Age in Naval Warfare’

Long-Range, Low Signature, High-Precision SSM

Claiming that it opens a new age in surface-to-surface missiles (SSM), Roketsan will feature its ATMACA missile at DSEI in London next month.

Unveiled at IDEF in Istanbul earlier this year, the indigenously-developed ATMACA is a ready-to-use weapon system for modern naval platforms that boasts long-range, low signature and high precision. With high resistance to countermeasures, all-weather capability, a target updating/mission termination facility and a comprehensive mission planning system featuring 3D routing, ATMACA is effective against fixed or moving targets – shore installations and surface vessels.

Navigation is achieved through a combination of Global Positioning System (GPS), inertial navigation system (INS) and barometric/radar altimeter sub-systems, while the active radar seeker pinpoints the target with high precision. With a range of over 220km, the missile can carry a 250kg-class high explosive fragmentation warhead to beyond line-of-sight targets. Furthermore, a sophisticated, modern datalink provides ATMACA with the ability to update targets, re-attack and/or terminate the mission.

Various operational modes – such as time-on-target, target shooting and target firing – ATMACA offers the operators to select the most appropriate mode for the mission at hand. The advanced structural design, which makes significant use of composite materials, has resulted in a reduced weight and enhanced structural robustness.

Serial production of ATMACA for the Turkish armed forces began last year and integration of the system onto Turkish naval vessels is already under way. Initial operational firing tests for the system, to be integrated onto the MILGEM corvettes, are expected to begin in the near future, Roketsan revealed.
