DSA 2018: MFRAD Sailing Forth

GEM Elettronica expect service entry of MFRAD by 2019

Officials from GEM Elettronica, speaking to MONChS during the DSA 201 exhibition, held in Kuala Lumpur between 16-19 April, expect the Marina Militaire (Italian Navy) to commence service with the company’s MFRAD X-band (8.5 gigahertz/GHz to 10.68GHz) naval surveillance radar onboard its new multipurpose offshore patrol vessels by the early 2019 at the latest.

The radar is currently undergoing sea trials with the navy. The MFRAD is a three-dimensional (velocity, azimuth and altitude) radar which uses an active electronically scanned array antenna. With a maximum instrumented range of 96 nautical miles/nm (177.7 kilometres), the radar offers 60 degrees of elevation for the detection of air targets, with the capacity to track up to 300 air and surface targets simultaneously.

Providing frequency agility, the radar can perform fully automatic detection and tracking of air and surface targets and has six operational surface and air surveillance modes, with frequency agility and LPI (Low Probability of Interception) capabilities to help preserve the radar’s resistance to electronic attack.
