DCI Completes Training of First Crews for Indian SCORPENEs

Training Delivered Ashore and Afloat

Paris-based Défense Conseil International (DCI) has completed training for approximately 100 Indian submariners – two complete crews – for that nation’s SCORPENE-class submarines. Six of the class are being built by Indian shipyard Mazagon Dock under a 2005 agreement and DCI has been engaged in training the crews since September 2015.

The SCORPENE submarine features a much higher degree of automation than previous generation designs, making effects-oriented training even more important. DCI has dedicated a team of nine expert submariners to the training task, transferring knowledge and French Navy know-how, as well as ‘training the trainers’ – educating the Indian instructors who will subsequently train the crews of the other four submarines.

Training was conducted shore, alongside and afloat, ensuring crew competence in dealing effectively with the boat’s equipment and systems to French Navy standards, on the surface and submerged, in both normal and degraded conditions.

The training, which was performed on land then on board the submarine at the dockside and at sea, covered the submarine’s equipment and systems in accordance with current French Navy standards. Training covered the safe operation of the vessel, on the surface and submerged, in normal and degraded modes.

DCI has already provided submarine training to Chile and Malaysia; Brazil will be the next international client to benefit from DCI’s growing expertise in this area.
