Operationally-Proven Design for Canada’s Next Surface Warship
A team led by Navantia has submitted its bid for the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) programme, in which up to 15 frigate-sized surface warships are to be built by Irving Shipbuilding for the Royal Canadian Navy.
Complementing a strong heritage in warship design and construction, Navantia will be offering a proven operational ASW platform, modernised over years of experience in naval programmes worldwide. With Saab as the Combat Systems Integrator (CSI) and CEA Technologies providing key elements, the Navantia team is offering a fully compliant solution while at the same time promoting continued enhancement of Canadian shipbuilding industries.
The construction of a first-in-class design can be a high-risk undertaking. Success is significantly enhanced by applying lessons learned and transferring knowledge and technology acquired from previous builds in a timely manner. To mitigate risk, the Navantia-Saab team has developed a technology transfer process, proven and operational in five navies. Our team incorporates the following key components:
- Saab’s globally recognized 9LV Combat Management System (CMS), in service on over 240 platforms in 16 navies, including Canada’s own HALIFAX-class frigates;
- CEA Technologies’ Active Phased Array Radar, fully compliant with Canada’s requirements and in service onboard the Royal Australia Navy’s ANZAC-class frigate as well as being mandated for all future frigates to be built for the RAN;
- Other key partners include Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada, DRS Technologies Limited Canada, OSI Maritime Service and Rheinmetall Canada.
