Colombian Navy to Receive Coastal Surveillance Radars

Four Radars for SICTVM Donated by US Through INL

Before the end of this year, the Armada Nacional (Colombia’s Navy), will receive four Kelvin Hughes SBS-900 radars, to be used for coastal surveillance.

The radars will be integrated into the system of fixed radars the Navy is currently implementing, known as the Sistema Integrado de Control de Tráfico y Vigilancia Marítima (SICTVM or Integrated Maritime Surveillance and Traffic Control System). They have been purchased by the US government through the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) programme and donated to the Colombian government.

The four radars will be installed at Jurado, Bahía Solano, Pizarro and Isla Gorgona, all on the Pacific Coast – the principal locations from which drug traffickers leave Colombia with their illegal cargos. The environment on the coasts, featuring swamps, rivers and islands covered with jungle, make detection of illegal activities here extremely difficult.
