Collins Leads Open Systems Demo For US Army

Helicopter Integration Highlights Benefits Of Interoperable Digital Architecture

A team led by Collins Aerospace has demonstrated the ability to link multiple computers running different software programmes on a helicopter flight deck during a technical meeting run by open-systems expert groups.

The consortium included General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc, Parry Labs, Tektonux and Palantir Technologies, and ran the demonstration during the Technical Interchange Meeting run by the Open Group FACE (Future Airborne Capability Environment) and SOSA (Sensor Open Systems Architecture) consortia. Open Group FACE is a US-government/industry partnership working to define an open avionics environment for different aircraft types, while the SOSA consortium is working to achieve the same outcomes for sensor integration and interoperation.

In conjunction with our industry partners, we demonstrated an operational open systems solution that will support the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) guidelines and standards required by the US Army,” stated Dave Schreck, Collins’ VP/GM for military avionics and helicopters. “These standards have been put in place to ensure complex aviation systems are designed to reduce integration time and ultimately increase rapid, affordable deployments of innovation.”

The company also ran a similar demonstration at its own Open Systems Center of Excellence, located at the Collins’ Customer Experience Center in Huntsville, AL.
