Rockwell Collins plans enhancements to ground surveillance radar products

Rockwell Collins sources have disclosed to Monch that the firm plans to enhance its PSR-500 ground surveillance radar product over the coming years to improve the radar’s ability to detect unmanned aerial vehicles. Company officials stated that work is ongoing in the US to this end. Meanwhile, sources added that it is in the midst of deliveries of PSR-500 radars to an undisclosed NATO customer. That customer is expected to use the radar to enhance security at defence installations around the country. Deliveries of the radar commenced to this end in 2017 and could finish in circa 2020, depending on the number of systems which are eventually ordered. To date, the company said that it has delivered over 100 of these radars to the customer.

The company’s official literature notes that the PSR-500 uses a frequency-modulated, continuous wave design which can detect a human-sized target at a range of up to 500 metres (1500 feet). Crucially, for a ground surveillance radar, the system boasts a low false alarm rate, along with low power consumption and a compact design minimising size and weight. The C-band (5.25 gigahertz/GHz to 5.925GHz) radar can also be connected to other command and control assets using internet protocol connections.
