Canadian Night Illuminates

L3 Warrior Sensor Systems Receives First International Contract for BNVD-1531 Binocular

A Canadian government agency awarded L3 Warrior Sensor Systems a multimillion-dollar contract to deliver its Binocular Night Vision Device (BNVD-1531). Introduced to the market less than a year ago, L3 Warrior Sensor Systems latest night vision binocular offers a lightweight, ergonomic design similar to the AN/PVS-31 (4.2×4.2×3.4in at 0.99lbs with battery featuring Gen 3 image intensifier [I2] tubes) at a system weight significantly reduced over the AN/PVS-15 binocular (4.25×4.5×3.0in at 22.9oz also featuring Gen 3 tubes), all at a market competitive price.

The BNVD-1531 exemplifies the company’s drive for continuous product improvements in the areas of size, weight, performance and power (SWaP) consumption, the company states, incorporating features such as adjustable diopters, manual gain and focus adjustment for custom image quality optimisation, individually rotating monoculars and an integrated infrared illuminator, all of which enhance situational awareness, enabling operators to conduct missions more effectively and efficiently. The BNVD-1531 can be operated as a helmet-mounted, head-mounted or hand-held system. The rotating binocular design allows low profile against helmet when in stowed position and ability to use as a single monocular. It furthermore features replaceable/upgradable I2 tube assemblies.

“The BNVD-1531 adds a new dimension of capability to our extensive portfolio of night vision solutions,” Serge Buchakjian, General Manager of International Solutions for Warrior Sensor Systems, said. “By combining the features most sought after by our customers, the BNVD-1531 is the best-value solution to deliver night vision capability that is interchangeable across multiple users in a variety of operational environments.”

The BNVD-1531 is manufactured in Londonderry, New Hampshire, by L3 Warrior Sensor Systems, which is part of the company’s Sensor Systems business segment. The binocular includes high-performance Gen 3 I2 tubes from L3’s Electron Tube Operations facility in Tempe, AZ. The BNVD-1531 has also been adopted by a number of US government agencies.

L3 Warrior Sensor Systems develops and manufactures fully qualified, advanced night vision and electro-optical systems and components for the US military, law enforcement, first responder agencies and allied nations across the globe. An original and qualified manufacturer of night vision imaging technology, L3 Warrior Sensor Systems uses the latest in thermal, image intensifier and fusion technologies to provide an extensive portfolio of products that enables optimal performance during the day, at night and in adverse weather.

The 1531 is provided with high-performance, Gen III image intensifiers manufactured by L3 Electron Tube Operations. They feature auto-gating power supplies and are available in green or white phosphor and a range of figure of merit performance levels. L3’s white phosphor technology provides the warfighter with greater target detection and recognition. Low-light and nighttime maneuvers appear more natural in black and white, with added contrast detail in shapes and shadows providing the operator more visual information for assessment and acquisition.

Includes Gen III I2 tubes with auto-gated technology to prevent damage in high-light environments; High-performance white phosphor image with enhanced degree of detail in overall contrast and range of shades while providing the operator with more visual information for accurate assessment and acquisition; Manual system gain and focus adjustments for custom image quality optimisation; Lightweight ergonomic design reduces head-borne weight and decreases neck strain; and Adjustable diopter eyepieces to allow use by operators with differing visual acuity.
