Rafael to Deliver Initial One Company of Systems to KMW
The German Army has selected Rafael’s TROPHY active protection system (APS) for its LEOPARD 2 tank fleet, the company announced on 23 February.
The initial contract calls for the delivery of sufficient systems for a tank company, plus interceptors, spare parts and training, to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) over the next several years. Additional contracts to equip most of the LEOPARD 2 fleet are anticipated.
The TROPHY APS provides mature, combat-proven protection against rocket and missile threats and simultaneously locates the origin of hostile fire to enable immediate response. TROPHY is the only fully-integrated, combat-proven APS available and has been installed on Israel1 MERKAVA tanks and NAMER APCs since 2010. It has made numerous combat interceptions with no injuries to crews, dismounted troops or damage to platforms since its first operational interception in 2011. TROPHY has accrued over 1,000,000 operating hours, including 5,400 successful field tests, and is now under contract for serial production of over 1,800 systems.
In January, Rafael and partner DRS announced they had completed the delivery of TROPHY ordered by the US Army for installation on ABRAMS main battle tanks, under contracts awarded on an ‘urgent need’ basis.
“Germany is joining an exclusive group of advanced tier-1 nations who have chosen [the] TROPHY APS to protect their troops and assets from the ever-increasing threat of anti-armour warfare,” commented Dr Ran Gozali, Executive VP and head of Rafael’s Land and Naval Division.
