Built to S1 Standard, Delivery by 2027
The Bundeswehr has ordered an additional 50 Puma IFVs from Projekt System & Management GmbH (PSM), a joint venture of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, the companies announced on 15 May.
Total order value amounts to €1.087 billion (US$1.19 billion), of which €574 million accrues to KMW and €501 million Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, both subcontractors in the project. In addition to the vehicles themselves, the order encompasses spare parts, special tool sets and eight MELLS flight-phase simulators. There is also an option for additional driver training vehicles and integration of a turret-independent secondary weapon system, or TSWA. Delivery is scheduled to start in December 2025 and be complete in early 2027. The Puma IFV is the principal weapons system for the German Army’s mechanised infantry, carrying up to nine troops including the three-man crew. In addition to its modular, highly effective force protection technology, Puma possesses a unique level of battlefield lethality, coupled with an outstanding network-enabled operations capability.
In February, the Bundeswehr ordered the comprehensive modernisation of 143 Pumas in inventory, not yet upgraded to the S1 standard. Scheduled for completion by 2029, the upgrade includes, among other things, integration of high-resolution day- and night-capable camera systems, the MELLS multirole lightweight guided missile system, and integration of digital radio equipment. When they leave the factory, the fifty newly-ordered vehicles will also conform to the latest S1 standard.
