Delivery of Second Riachuelo boat in 2023
On 4 November the Brazilian Humaitá submarine conducted a static immersion test – a pre-requisite for its forthcoming sea trials.
Second of the four diesel-electric Riachuelo-class submarines being built under the PROSUB programme, Humaitá conducted the test close to the Itaguaí Naval Complex, marking a further step on the road to delivering a second operational boat to the Brazilian Navy in the second half of next year.
A static immersion test consists of the controlled intake of water into the ballast tanks until the submarine is completely submerged without using its propulsion system. The boat’s responses to the movement of internal weights is then recorded, determining the relevant inclination angles and thus establishing parameters for transverse and longitudinal stability. The test also verifies the water intake volume, determining and verifying the boat’s displacement. Tests of rescue procedures and launch of exercise pyrotechnics were also conducted, also essential characteristics of the acceptance sea trials.
