SPH Retired in 2017 Will Replace 2S1 GVOZDIKA
The Uruguayan Army has begun negotiations with Brazil for the receipt of at least eight M-108 155mm self-propelled howitzers (SPH) as a donation.
The M-108s – manufacture of which ceased in 1963 – were retired from Brazilian service in 2017-2018, having been delivered to Brazil in the early 1970s as part of a batch of 72 from surplus US Army stocks, virtually brand new. These were the systems with which the Brazilian Army’s Self-Propelled Field Artillery Groups (GAC AP) were initially formed.
The Uruguayan Army currently operates six 2S1 GVOZDIKA 122mm SPH, which were received in 1998. They will be replaced by the M-108s.
