Bittium to Maintain TAC WIN and TOUGH VoIP for Finnish Defence Forces

€3.4 Million Contract Covers 2019-2020

Bittium announced on 28 January that it has been awarded a contract by the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF), valued at €3.4 million, to maintain and further develop its Software Defined Radio (SDR)-based Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) system, and its TOUGH Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system for tactical IP calls and data transfer. These systems are used by the FDF to support their reformed combat doctrine, in which mobility, leading the troops on the move and effective communications play a key role.

The purchase order applies to the years 2019-2020 and includes technical support for the systems and equipment, software support, maintaining readiness for system support, management of system support and development of new features. Also included is development of the waveform used by the TAC WIN system. The development work continues the further improvement of the data transfer capacity and survivability of the TAC WIN system.

TAC WIN is an SDR-based wireless broadband network system intended for military and public safety use. With the system mobile ad hoc network (MANET), link and connection networks can be formed into one logical IP network quickly, regardless of location. TAC WIN is compatible with existing fixed and wireless network infrastructures. The core of the system is a tactical router enabling users to freely form both wired and wireless broadband data transfer IP connections. The tactical router also enables connections to a variety of terminals and communication systems, connecting them into a single network. In addition to the router, the system comprises three types of radio heads, each covering its own frequency band, used for the flexible formation of optimised network topologies. All the products of the system are designed for harsh conditions, and thanks to the system’s automated functions the implementation of the system can be done quickly. Due to the software-based functionality of the Bittium TAC WIN system, it can be easily updated with additional performance cost-efficiently during the whole lifespan of the system.

The products included in the Bittium TOUGH VoIP product family enable tactical IP calls and broadband data transfer, even in the most demanding conditions. They can also be easily integrated with existing IP infrastructure: fixed and wireless tactical data network users can be connected to the same voice service network, which significantly improves the capability to command troops and maintain situational awareness in the rapidly changing conditions of the modern battlefield.
