MONCh Gear Box Product Review
New to Benchmade‘s professional “Black Class” product-line is the 980 TURRET tactical folding knife, a very large 100% ambidextrous Axis lock folder with a 9.40cm (3.7in) drop point blade of CPM-S30V steel, 3.150mm (0.124in) thick.
The locking mechanism is built around a hardened steel bar that rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners, with springs that are firm enough to provide a positive click when manually deploying the blade via the dual thumb studs.
At an overall length of 21.84cm (8.60in) open (closed: 12.45cm/4.90in), weighing 164.71g (5.81 ounces), this very sturdy tactical cutting tool is just at the edge of being too large for an EDC item. The knife has a G10 handle (17.02mm/0.67in thick) with scales, offering a great grip with plenty of room for my big hand and a reversible deep-carry clip.
Designed with features preferred by law enforcement (LE) amd military users, the 980 TURRET checks all my boxes. It opens smoothly, the locking mechanism allows for one hand closing, and it looks cool. This Black Class knife is bound to become a favourite in the tactical and LE communities, as it has become a favourite in the MONCh Gear Box.
