BAE Systems to modernise guided-missile cruiser
On 12 February, the US Navy awarded a $9.6million contract to BAE Systems to modernise the guided-missile cruiser, USS PHILIPPINE SEA. This Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) contract includes options that could bring the cumulative value to approximately $72million if exercised.
Commissioned in 1989, USS PHILIPPINE SEA is a TICONDEROGA-class cruiser built by Ingalls Shipbuilding (now Huntington Ingalls), which will undergo ten months of work at BAE Systems’ Jacksonville, FL/USA shipyard and at nearby Naval Station Mayport. Modernisation work is scheduled to begin in April and to be completed in February 2019.
“We have extensive experience with the Navy’s TICONDEROGA-class guided missile cruisers and specifically with the PHILIPPINE SEA,” said Todd Hooks, General Manager of BAE Systems Jacksonville Ship Repair. “We will utilise our cruiser experience to accomplish the DSRA and return the ship back to the fleet ready for continued service.”
