Babcock to Support Brazilian Flagship

NAM Atlântico Added to Global Support Programme

Babcock and the Marinha do Brasil (MB – Brazilian Navy) have signed a four-year contract for the provision of through-life support to the MB’s flagship, NAM Atlântico, formerly Britain’s HMS Ocean.

Babcock’s key asset management activities include deep maintenance, in-service support, equipment and systems support and through-life engineering of naval assets worldwide. Babcock will draw on this significant experience to provide the MB with a support solution that will enable it to deliver international operations.

The through-life support package will see Babcock deliver maintenance planning and delivery, technical advice and knowledge transfer, further assisting the Navy to develop a spares management system for the ship, deliver a range of technical training packages to personnel on-board and at the naval base, and developing and installing upgrades on the ship. An in-country team will be embedded within the Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro, the MB’s main maintenance centre and naval base, to deliver this package of work, supported by a team based in the UK, which will provide technical support from the wider Babcock business.

Our innovative end-to-end support solution delivers support to equipment, system and platforms, optimising availability to ensure operational success for our customers around the globe,” said Gary Simpson, Managing Director of the Marine Support business.

Support has already commenced, with an in-country presence established ahead of the first maintenance period, scheduled to begin in April 2022. This contract follows Babcock’s recent activity in the global maritime market, including the first export contract for its Arrowhead 140 frigate through a design licence agreement with PT PAL Indonesia (Persero), and being selected to provide platform design and technology for Poland’s Miecznik frigate programme. The company has also signed an MoU with Hyundai Heavy Industries to collaborate on the Korean CVX light aircraft carrier opportunity, and is to deliver a variable speed drive for the central cooling system on the Irish Navy’s Samuel Beckett class.
