Axis Communications Raft of Innovation and Product Development

8th-generation System-on-Chip Underpins Advanced Capabilities

Ahead of GSX [Global Security Exchange] opening in Orlando, FL, next week, Axis Communications has unveiled a raft of new product development and innovations.

ARTPEC-8 is the 8th generation of the company’s custom-designed system-on-Chip (SoC), developed for network video. Accelerating capabilities in superior imaging, enhanced security and powerful compression, the new chip will be the basis for the vast majority of Axis network video products. Some of the first cameras to include this chip are the soon-to-be-launched AXIS Q3536-LVE/38-LVE dome cameras and AXIS Q1656-LE box camera.

With ARTPEC-8, Axis is leading the way toward a new era of exciting analytics based on deep learning on the edge,” commented CTO Johan Paulsson. “We want to deliver the easiest access to actionable insights through the widest range of analytics on the market.  Our ultimate goal is to contribute to creating a smarter, safer world by addressing more and more important use cases. Plus, ARTPEC-8 is 100% optimized for high-quality network video solutions. And, as always, we have complete control over every single transistor.”

The Q1656-LE high performance box camera is one of the devices to be based on the latest Axis SoC, offering premium Q-line functionality and exceptional video quality even in poor light. This water-resistant, weatherproof camera includes a built-in wiper to guarantee great images even in snow and rain. It includes AXIS Object Analytics for highly nuanced object classification and reliable detection with fewer false positives.  Furthermore, with support for AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) version 4, Axis enables innovation on Axis AI-based edge devices and strengthens its commitment towards computer-vision-based solutions.

Similarly, the Q3538-LVE and Q3536-LVE outdoor-ready dome cameras embody similar technology and offer outstanding image quality, even in the harshest environments and weather. Featuring an innovative IR-shielded dome, they prevent reflections from dust, rain, and snow, to deliver sharp images every time. Axis OptimizedIR guarantees clear images, even in complete darkness, while Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and Axis Forensic WDR ensure true colours and great detail in challenging light or near darkness.

Axis Scene Intelligence technology creates a superior foundation for consistent analytics performance, by combining advanced image processing technology with analytics on the edge and deep learning. It uses algorithms trained in real-life environments to deliver valuable metadata even under challenging surveillance conditions such as low light and wide dynamic range.  Axis Scene Intelligence puts market-leading expertise from decades of experience with image processing to work. The result is the ideal input for consistent performance with minimal false alarms. It leverages Axis expertise in image- and edge-processing and the latest SoC, which includes a deep learning processing unit (DLPU), to provide the building blocks for high-quality analytics on the edge.

The AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) version 4 offers new opportunities for developers looking to build solutions for Axis devices. Designed to lower the threshold for developers moving to the edge, it includes industry-standard APIs and frameworks as well as support for high-level programming languages.

For over a decade, ACAP has enabled developers to create applications for various scenarios such as traffic management and business optimization. Today, given the increased image quality and particularly the introduction of edge-based accelerated deep learning, the data produced on the edge opens up the potential for a step-change in computer vision applications. To address this opportunity, the ACAP 4 has been designed to be as accessible as possible for developers, through the adoption of well-known APIs and industry-standard technologies.
