US DoD Selects Smiths Detection & 908 Devices for AVCAD

One of Only Two Teams Selected to Further Develop Chemical Detector

The US Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) has selected a team comprising Smiths Detection and 908 Devices (a Boston-based pioneer of purpose-built analytical devices for chemical and biomolecular analysis) to move on to the engineering and manufacturing phase of the Aerosol and Vapor Chemical Agent Detector (AVCAD) – one of only two such selections made by the Joint Project Manager, Nuclear Biological Chemical Contamination Avoidance.

908 Devices will be providing its High-Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HPMS) technology to the programme. The technology, which lies at the heart of the company’s commercial analysis systems, including the MX908 trace chemical detection device, was extensively tested by the US Army for selectivity, sensitivity and capability during the development phase of AVCAD.

Being selected for the next phase of this programme is tremendous validation of our foundational technology platform and represents a major milestone in our pursuit to deliver on a new standard of chemical detection,” explained 908 Devices President and CEO, Dr. Kevin J Knopp. “We look forward to working in partnership with Smiths Detection on the AVCAD in this next phase and are truly honored to have a role in protecting our US military.”
