Next Generation Missile for Next Generation Aircraft
The latest generation weapon introduced to enhance air-to-surface (ATS) warfare capabilities of fighter aircraft is Roketsan‘s Stand-Off Missile SOM. SOM is an autonomous, long range (250km), low observable, high precision, all weather, ATS next generation missile to be used against highly defended, anti-access and high value, stationary and moving land/surface (ASuW) targets.
The SOM missile family has four variants: SOM-A, SOM-B1, SOM-B2, and SOM-J. SOM-A and SOM-B1 have HE Blast Fragmentation warhead while SOM-B2 has Dual Stage Tandem Penetrator Warhead. SOM-A, B1 and B2 are certified to F-4E 2020 and F-16 Block 40 platforms and under the serial production for the Turkish Air Force (TurAF).
Roketsan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus Defence & Space (DS) for the integration of SOM on the Eurofighter TYPHOON fighter aircraft. Furthermore, integrating SOM family to non-NATO platforms is relatively easy with smart integration solutions.
Due to the common requirements of TurAF and its 5th Generation Fighter Programme, SOM-J has been presented as an air to ground stand-off missile for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). In October 2014, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control and Roketsan signed a teaming agreement to jointly develop, produce, market, sell, and support SOM-J for F-35 and other potential platforms.
