NAVAL FORCES speaks to Teledyne Marine about their GAVIA AUV
At DSEI 2017, NAVAL FORCES spoke to Arnar Steingrimsson, Global Head of Sales Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) for Teledyne Marine, about the GAVIA AUV: “Originally our systems were widely used in the commercial oil and gas field, but in the last couple of years we have been expanding into the defence market.”
GAVIA is a self-contained, low-logistics, modular survey AUV platform that delivers high quality data while operating from a vessel of opportunity or from the shore. It has four basic modules that can be swapped according to the different missions assigned to the platform. “It is mainly used for mine countermeasure and search and rescue missions, as well as anti-submarine warfare training,” continues Mr Steingrimsson. Defence and security modules include sonar options, positioning, an acoustic modem and recovery aids.
“To move into the defence market we worked on adding automatic target recognition, increasing autonomy (between 5 and 8 hours depending on the payload), and focusing on defence-specific payloads,” says Mr Steingrimsson. “In the near future, we are now focusing our efforts on filling data gaps by adding high frequency multi-beam to expand survey coverage area and on increasing performance.” GAVIA is currently being used by the Turkish, Portuguese, Polish and Russian navies, and according to Mr Steingrimsson Teledyne is looking to expand sales to tier two navies.
