Australian Army to receive new AN/PRC-158 radios

Harris has told MONS that the Australian Army will take delivery of the company’s AN/PRC-158 FALCON-III multiband, multi-channel MANPACK tactical radios and vehicular amplifiers as part of the force’s Land-200 Tranche-2 programme.

The acquisition, worth $286 million according to the company, will see Harris providing, “an integrated tactical communications network for voice and data service to tactical forces over line-of-sight and beyond line-of-sight applications,” the company told MONS in a written statement. The statement continued that, alongside the provision of radios, the programme will provide, “network planning, monitoring and routing software and other systems and technology from Harris and other partner companies. Harris further disclosed that an initial two-year design period is expected as part of the contract, with deliveries continuing “over multiple years.”

Harris continued that it expects these radios to be deployed at the brigade level and below with the Australian Army. This will include installations on platforms such as, “current in-service vehicles such as tanks and protected vehicles, as well as the army’s future reconnaissance and infantry fighting vehicles.”

Moreover, the company revealed that these new radios will include a degree of local customisation in the guise of national waveforms and also, “network planning, monitoring and routing software technology.”

According to Australian Army documents, the Land-200 Tranche-2 programme will see these radios installed on the force’s General Dynamics M1A1 ABRAMS main battle tanks and ASLAV eight-wheel drive light armoured vehicles, Thales BUSHMASTER four-wheel drive armoured vehicle, BAE Systems M-113AS4 tracked armoured personnel carriers and Thales HAWKEYE light four-wheel drive mobility vehicles procured under the Land-121 Phase-4 effort.
