Raytheon & Rheinmetall teaming
Raytheon and Rheinmetall are teaming to evaluate a US Army draft request for proposal (RFP) to supply the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV), a replacement for the BRADLEY fighting vehicle, within Next-Generation Combat Vehicle portfolio.
The service expects OMFV to be faster, smarter, more agile and better-armoured than the legacy-era BRADLEY. The LYNX fighting vehicle built by Rheinmetall, will provide the foundation. Of significance, Rheinmetall has launched its campaign to use LYNX to compete in the Australian Department of Defence’s Land 400 Phase 3 programme, which will deliver an IFV for close combat – to close in and defeat an enemy. The IFV will replace the Australian Defence Force M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier. Matt Warnick, Managing Director for Team LYNX, noted the Rheinmetall-led team is expecting to use Raytheon’s integration capabilities and, as significant, its technologies for the LYNX. The industry team design will incorporate Raytheon systems and products for combat vehicles, including sights, sensors, fire-control systems and missiles. One Raytheon weapon of interest noted by Mr Warnick was the COYOTE unmanned aircraft system, which is equipped with special software that enables several to work together by flying in a swarm. Some collect information, while others identify and attack ground targets. The COYOTE UAS is also an effective counter-drone technology. Like those systems, the new LYNX vehicle will be made in America. To that end, Mr Warnick indicated Team LYNX recently completed a meeting with about 80 US-based prospective suppliers in Detroit, Michigan, to discuss a full range of potential life cycle issues, from parts to industrial processes and more.
Asked whether it is too late for other companies to join the team, the director replied “No.” For his part, Mr Warnick works out of his newly opened Leesburg, Virginia office – which is also noteworthy, as it further expands Rheinmetall’s US presence. Team LYNX is quickening its pace to be ready to respond to the RFP, expected by the end of this month, by planning follow on meetings with its evolving industry team members.
