AUSA 2017: Orbital ATK Developing AMP 120mm Tank Round

First Images Of Warhead And All Up Round Unveiled at AUSA 2017

Orbital ATK is in the final stages of development for the US Army’s Advanced Multi-Purpose 120mm AMP XM1147 High Explosive Multi-Purpose with Tracer (HEMP-T). This is a second technology insertion of an advanced ammunition type (Orbital ATK type classified and is currently in production of the M829A4 Advanced Kinetic Energy cartridge) for the Abrams tank. AMP provides greater capabilities and battle carry flexibility for tank crews.

This past month, the company completed the first in a series of design tests and is on track for design review in mid-2018 and qualification by mid-2019. Production will begin as early as 2019 and continue through 2020 with the expectation of follow on production options exercised to provide the US Army with a complete war stock.

Using the ABRAMS’ ammunition data link, the gunner will use the fire control system to programme the AMP fuze for a specific operational mode (point detonate or airburst). The versatility of the round lies in the crew’s ability to specify the engagement mode which in turn, greatly reduces crew reaction time and increases battlefield survivability.

AMP will technologically replace four current, inventory rounds without sacrificing capability against target sets including bunker defeat, light armor, rubbling and enemy troops out to 500 metres. AMP also adds new capabilities to breach reinforced walls, defeat of anti-tank guided missile teams and airburst capability out to 2,000 metres.
