AUSA 2018: Call the Cavalry

PTS is equipping the US Army with its Power Supply Docking Systems

During the Association of the United States Army exhibition being held between 8 October and 10 October in Washington DC, officials from PTS shared with Monch that the company was now equipping the US Army’s Second Cavalry Regiment (2CR), headquartered in Vilseck, southern Germany, with its PTS-2018 Power Supply Docking System.

The company has developed the PTS-2018 to offer the same capabilities to dismounted man-pack and handheld tactical radios as they would enjoy when connected to a docking station inside a vehicle. This is particularly applicable in terms of providing similar levels of amplification, clarity and tactical radio performance. The entire PTS-2018 ensemble includes a the docking station which can accommodate between one and two man-pack and handheld transceivers, depending on the configuration, and a portable power source, the company’s PTS E-Kit, which includes solar blankets and also batteries, plus an antenna; all of which can be assembled and ready for use in a matter of minutes.

Official literature provided by the company states that the PTS-2018 is ‘radio agnostic’ as regards the man-pack and handheld transceivers that it can accommodate, including Harris’ AN/PRC-117G man-pack and AN/PRC-152 handheld very/ultra high frequency (30 megahertz/MHz to three gigahertz) radios, and AN/PRC-150 man-pack high frequency (three megahertz to 30MHz) radios. Company officials told Monch that the PTS-2018 allows users of these, and other man-pack and handheld transceivers, to benefit from the same performance that they would obtain when connected to a vehicle’s radio docking station without needing to run the vehicle’s engine; This helps to conserve fuel and preserve stealth by avoiding the need to run a vehicle’s engine and hence acoustically betray the vehicle’s position, particularly at night. Moreover, this performance can be obtained in a dismounted context at a forward-deployed headquarters, for instance, without a vehicle needing to be present. Company officials continued that PTS is in the process of delivering four systems to the 2CR, with every possibility that additional deliveries will follow in the coming years.
