AI and Data Fusion Solutions for Air Surveillance Radar Data Processing

Turkey’s Aselsan is one of three companies to have won the NATO Communications and Information (NCI) Agency’s fifth annual Defence Innovation Challenge.

After participating in the challenge with two separate projects aimed at improving the processing of distributed air surveillance radar data, a panel of judges drawn from across NATO selected Aselsan as one of three winners. One of the company’s solutions is an architecture, in which a module operates a local radar as an ‘AI [artificial intelligence] operator,’ with the intelligence gathered from other, distributed radars. Studies have shown that the rapid and precise manner in which the AI controls the radar – much faster than a human operator – results in significant improvement in efficiency of the radar network.

The second offering centred on the company’s A-FACT solution, which fuses data from a host of different sources into a single air pricture. Even in a dense and cluttered environment, A-FACT can bring significant improvement to the functioning of NATO’s radar network.

Aselsan’s engineers and technologists develop innovative and high-tech solutions for the problems facing defence and security professionals. Succeeding in the NCI Agency’s Defence Innovation Challenge 2020 means the company now has the opportunity to participate in a pilot programme examining the potential to put these solutions into operational use for NATO’s collective security.
