IDEF 2017: Aselsan Showcases Electromagnetic Launcher Prototype

Successful Live Fire Tests in 2016

Aselsan has been engaged in an R&D project to develop an Electromagnetic Launcher (EML), otherwise known as a railgun, since 2014. Initial live firing tests conducted in December 2016 were successful and the company will now demonstrate a prototype weapon at IDEF 2017.

With high muzzle energy and a projectile speed of 2,000-2,500m/s, the EML’s effective range is more than 300km, according to the company. Under evaluation is the system’s suitability as a credible air defence system to counter sophisticated modern airborne threats. The Aselsan EML has the potential to bring multi-mission capability to the battlefield as a result of parallel development in smart ammunition technologies. Capable of providing anti-surface strike, air defence and naval fire support, the EML will feature low-cost mission effectiveness against current threat levels, reduced acquisition and through life costs and high platform reliability.

Aselsan has been working diligently to put critical technologies in place for the continued development of the EML and associated systems: its goal is to become a leading manufacturer of EML systems.
