Argentine Army Showcases New Equipment Capabilities

Vehicles, Weapons and C4ISR Systems Dominate

On 2 December the Argentine Army mounted an exhibition of equipment inducted into service during 2020. The event took place at the Arsenal Directorate in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Buenos Aires province), in the presence of Defence Minister Agustin Rossi, and included both newly-acquired and refurbished/upgraded equipment.

Among the new vehicles received were the 22 Freightliner M916A3 tractor trucks, the new batch of 19 Oshkosh M-1083A2P2 6×6 trucks (including seven trailers), the first 10 Ford RANGERs militarised by Igarreta and a total of 23 Toyota HILUX 4×4 low-complexity ambulances. In addition, the Rapid Deployment Force received a total of 16 Polaris light exploration vehicles, in both two- and four-seater variants.

Although not a new addition, one of the vehicles that attracted most attention was a Mercedes Benz 230G, modified by the Arsenals Directorate with a protective grille on the windshield, a tubular structure to provide greater protection and a MAG machine gun mount with 360° traverse. This prototype will be evaluated by the force to assess the utility of modifying others in the same way. The plan to replace the engines with diesel units was also confirmed.

Among refurbished vehicles, ten Mercedes Benz UNIMOG, eight M113 and two TAM VCA, as well as an additional Mercedes Benz 230G jeep were on show. Additional vehicles highlighted included four VW Constellation 19.420 V-Tronic 4×2 and eight 32.360 V-Tronic tractor trucks, and 53 single-axle trailers for the Army’s HMMWV utility vehicles.

A variety of weapons were also delivered for Rapid Deployment Force units during 2020, including 24 Daniel Defense DD5V4 semi-automatic 7.62×51 sniper rifles and 196 DDM4 automatic 5.56×45 rifles; 81 B&T APC 9 Pro G submachine guns; 47 APC 9K Pro G and 54 APC 9 SD Pro G with silencers; plus 74 Glock G19X and 91 Glock G17 Gen5 pistols, also including silencers for some of them. Four subcalibre training devices, 60 MAG CX machine guns modified for the infantry and 11 refurbished Browning 12.7mm machine guns were also among the items on display.

As for Army aviation, the last two Agusta Bell AB-206 JET RANGERs that entered service, modernised by Fadea, were on show, as was the 17th UH-1H brought to HUEY 2 standard by Army Aviation Command. In addition, a biosecurity module donated by Geotex, together with stretchers for the transport of COVID patients, donated by FixView and HRG Consulting, were also exhibited.

In the communications equipment segment, 10 Harris RF-7800 PM-001 portable HF/VHF radios; 86 Elbit PRC 930 portable radios; 68 Elbit VRC 950 VHF vehicular radios and 156 Elbit PNR1000 backpack radio equipment were also received.

A Towable Communications Satellite Terminal and a Mobile Solar Energy Unit developed by local company Exo was showcased: the latter has 12sqm of solar panels, endurance of eight hours, providing 1Kw and 3KVA of power. A wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment was received and/or refurbished during 2020, including 53 AN/PVS-7B/D night vision goggles, 36 DJI MAVIV II drones, 236 Vortex SOLO R/T 8×36 monocular glasses, an artillery data acquisition system and 675 bulletproof vests.
